$26 million settlement in Chemtura bankruptcy
Chemtura Coporation, the nation’s largest pool chemical supplier, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency agreed on a $26 million settlement in Chemtura’s bankruptcy case yesterday. Chemtura filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2009 after they faced several environmental liabilities and violations from the EPA.
The $26 million will be spent to clean up 17 properties with environmental violations. 12 of the properties are considered to be of most serious hazardous waste site condition by the EPA. Environmental liabilities from Chemtura’s Gowanus Canal Superfund Site are still being negotiated.
